6 Things You Gotta Know Before Going Commando

There’s nothing quite like going commando. If you’re reading this and thinking, “What is going commando?” Let us give you a quick briefing: It means no briefs. No underwear. No dividing layer between you and your favorite pair of chinos. It’s the ultimate freedom.

But is it bad to not wear underwear? Not necessarily. For most people, wearing underwear means less laundry, more protection downstairs, and increased comfort. However, if you can’t stop thinking about what the wind might feel like on your cheeks, prepare for your Undie-free future with these six helpful tidbits:

Be Aware of Chafing

Chafing is skin irritation caused by the unfortunate combination of friction, moisture, and fabric. A pair of underwear acts as a protective barrier between your skin and the fabric of your clothing, so without it your skin could rub in unpleasant ways. Of course, this can happen with Undies too, if you aren’t wearing the right fabric. Our signature MicroModal fabric is breathable and super-soft, but if you want something quick-drying and ultra-light, our Breathe fabric was literally made for movement.

If you want to go no Undies but don’t want to suffer the consequences of chafing, try sprinkling some baby powder down there to decrease any possible moisture.

Avoid Jock Itch

Jock itch isn’t a pleasant thing to think about, but for many people it’s an unpleasant reality. The rash presents when you’re exposed to fungus, which could be lurking in your very own pant legs. Fungi grows in humid environments, so if you’re wearing the fancy jeans you never wash because you don’t want them to shrink, there could be some fungi laying in wait.

Fight the fungi with (again) baby powder. A light dusting should keep everything dry, but if you want to be extra-careful, try bathing more regularly and washing your pants after every use.

Step Up Laundry Game

If you’re not planning on wearing Undies, you should plan on picking up some extra detergent. Because underwear is meant to act as a protective layer between your bits and your clothes, removing it means your clothes are just going to rub against your skin all day. That’s totally fine, but skin carries bacteria, sweat, and oil, so your clothes will get dirty faster.

Be Cautious of Sweat Stains

Undies absorb excess moisture to keep your skin and your clothes dry. When there’s no underwear, there isn’t anywhere for that sweat to go other than your clothing.

If you’re in a humid climate or are prone to sweating, keep an eye on your clothes to make sure no unwanted sweat stains are starting to crop up. Pro-tip: lighter colored clothes show sweat stains more than dark colored clothing.

Avoid Tight Pants

Tight pants can look great, but sometimes they feel terrible. If you’re looking to go commando, wearing tight pants might lead to your downfall. No ventilation and increased friction? No thank you. See our first, second, and fourth points on this list for reference.
