The Curious Case of How to Measure Your Underwear

There’s nothing worse than getting new underwear and putting it on to discover it doesn’t fit at all. Okay, maybe there are a few things worse than that, but still—it’s pretty bad. You’ll end up just keeping the underwear, forever haunted by the ghost of your mistakes. Or you’ll return the underwear, which isn’t terrible, but is still just, like, kind of bothersome.

The only way to get out of this debacle? Solving the case of which size to order. Once we (because we’re doing this together) figure out your underwear size, you’ll be rocking and rolling in the softest Undies in the world. Getting new underwear will once again be the joyous occasion it’s always been meant to be!

For the purposes of this article, you’ll need some measuring tape and good posture. Other than that, it’s pretty simple to figure out your perfect size (plus our handy underwear size guide).

For the Ladies: How to Measure

To get the most accurate measurement for women’s underwear, make sure to wear tight fitting clothes. Anything baggy or heavy might affect your measurements and then we’ll be right back where we started. Stand up straight, put your feet together, and make sure your measuring tape is completely level. If you’re between measurements, go a size down.

Measuring Those Hips So They Don’t Lie

If you want to know how to measure your hips, you’ve come to the right place. To get the best results, measure the fullest part of your hips and booty. Hold your measuring tape on your left hip and wrap it around your rear to your right hip. Then bring it back around to your left hip (it should be in a circle, basically).

Voila. You’ve got a hip measurement.

Measuring That Waist So You Don’t Waste Your Time

Learning how to measure your waist isn’t as hard as you might think. Your natural waistline is that sweet spot above your hip bones and underneath your rib cage. Using the same skills we mastered measuring your hips, measure along that natural waistline for your accurate measurement.

For the Gents: How to Measure

A crucial difference between men’s underwear and women’s underwear is that men’s underwear pretty much goes with the waistline and the waistline only. This means guys need to do a little less work to find their perfect size, which is, well, typical.

Measuring That Waist So You Don’t Waste Your Time

Boys, take notes from the ladies, because measuring your waistline is basically the same no matter who you are. Find your natural waistline (AKA the spot above your hip bones and underneath your rib cage), take your measuring tape, and start from your left side. Wrap the tape around your butt and to your right side, and then complete the circle back on your left.

Make sure you aren’t holding your breath, though. It might mess with your measurement.
