Opinion: Should I Wear Underwear to Bed?

There’s no manual on life. If there was, we’d be flipping through that thing and bookmarking it to oblivion. Instead, we’re all just tossed upon the Earth with no instructions and have to somehow find our way. For many of us, this leads to existential questions, such as, “What’s my purpose?” and also, “What’s my function in society and how can I better the world?” But the most important question you could ever possibly ask yourself is, “Should I wear underwear to bed?”

If you’ve ever seen the 2004 classic “The Butterfly Effect” (starring an in-his-prime Ashton Kutcher), you’ll know that even the smallest decisions can open doors to unforeseen possibilities in the future. Sleeping in underwear is one of these such small decisions, so it’s great that you’ve taken it upon yourself to research this extremely pressing issue. As your friendly underwear authorities, we are going help solve this little riddle. Let’s get started!

Is it Okay to Sleep in Underwear?

To put it bluntly: Yes, it’s completely okay to sleep in underwear. Unless your underwear of choice is made out of hazardous and/or uncomfortable materials, you should suffer no issues by choosing to sleep in underwear.

The key to sleeping in underwear is choosing a fabric that is breathable and comfortable. We’ll get into fabrics a little later, but please be rest assured that any of our fabrics will make you feel like you’re already dreaming.

Reasons to Sleep in Underwear

We’ve established that it’s perfectly okay to sleep in underwear. But the question remains: Should you wear underwear to bed? And if so, why? Let’s find out.

• For Comfy Vibes

There’s nothing cozier than being swaddled in soft things. Sheets and blankets are already pretty irresistible, but adding another layer of comfy goodness only makes sleep-time better. Our super-soft Undies will enhance any snoozing you do, whether it be in bed, on the couch, or in a movie-theater seat.

• To Lighten Your Cleaning Load

Unless you want to be washing your sheets every couple of days, consider wearing underwear to bed to keep your bed nice and clean. We’re not suggesting you’re not clean by any means, but wearing underwear to sleep means there’s a layer of protection between your sheets and your nether regions and that’s not a bad thing.

• For Protection From the Unknown

Sometimes things just happen. For those of us who have periods, we know this intimately. You can never fully be sure when Mother Nature will come calling, so wearing Undies to sleep can help prevent any staining that might occur.

• To Regulate Your Body Temperature

It can be hard to feel just right when you’re trying to go to sleep. One second you’re too hot, one second you’re too cold. Wearing underwear to sleep can help by assisting you in controlling your body temperature. Cool, breathable fabrics can keep your skin from touching other areas of skin and can also help your body feel like it’s all one temperature.

If you end up getting sweaty, underwear will protect your sheets so that you don’t have a massive laundry day upon awakening. It’s a win-win.

• Just In Case

Say you have a sleepwalking problem you’re currently unaware of, or let’s say a neighbor comes knocking to borrow a cup of sugar for some late night munchies. You might not want to be caught in the nude, so sleeping in underwear can soothe any worries in that department. But hey, at the end of the day, it’s your house and your life, so sleep however you want.

Best Styles for Sleeping Underwear

When it comes to sleeping in underwear, there’s usually two routes people typically choose. One is to go minimal–as little fabric as possible while still getting some support. Great options in this category include our Pouch Front Thongs, Jockstraps, Bikinis, and Tangas

The other route is to go maximum protection—underwear with more fabric to keep you comfy. If this sounds more your style, look for our Boxer Briefs, Boxers, and Boyshorts. If you sleep a little colder, we’ve even got Long Undies that’ll warm you right up.

Best Fabrics for Sleeping Underwear

Okay, so you’ve decided you’re going to commit to the experience of sleeping in underwear and you’ve chosen your preferred style. Now comes the most important part of it: Choosing the right fabric.

You’re going to want fabric that allows for airflow, most importantly, but you also want it to be extremely soft. It’s gotta have some give in it to allow for movement and it definitely needs to make you feel good.

It just so happens that all of our fabrics fit that description. Our signature MicroModal is not only the softest fabric on the planet, it’s also sustainable, breathable, and static-resistant. Personally, we can’t think of better Undies for sleeping.

If you want to go for classic comfort, try our Stretch Cotton Undies. We take cotton you know and love and infuse it with stretching abilities so it can keep up with all your tossing and turning.

If you’re an extra-active sleeper, our Breathe fabric is our lightest, and it also has anti-odor and quick-drying properties. There’s not really a wrong way to go with any of our fabrics, so please don’t let this keep you up at night.

Is It Good to Sleep Without Underwear?

If the mood strikes and you don’t want to wear underwear to bed, you should follow that instinct. We only live once and it’s important to try new experiences so that you can continually learn and grow. And if you never try, you’ll simply never know.

But is it, like, good for you? Not especially, but honestly it doesn’t matter a whole lot. Follow your heart!
