What Is French Terry Fabric?

What is French Terry Fabric?

Boyfriend material isn’t hard to come by in the fabric world. We’ve all wrapped ourselves in a Hoodie that cradled us in a way that calmed our anxious little lizard brains, but what is that magical texture?

In English, we call it French Terry fabric. There’s no monsieur Terry to thank for this one, but French Terry fabric can make a francophile out of any fabric lover.

What is French Terry Material?

French Terry fabric is a knit fabric with soft loops on the inside and a smooth surface on the outside. Ours is heavier than the fabric in our T-shirts, Undies, and Modal Pullover Hoodies, but it’s still light enough to wear during naps. It’s the platonic ideal of a fabric for lounging around the house in comfort and style.

French Terry Vs Fleece

The easiest way to tell the difference between French Terry and fleece is that French Terry has a smooth side. Fleece refers to the texture of the fabric, which is similar to that of sheep’s wool. It’s coveted for how warm and breathable it is. Not baaaaah-d PR for sheep either.

French Terry Vs Terry Cloth

It’s important to make the distinction between French Terry Cloth and regular old Terry Cloth. The French variety has the smooth side we mentioned, but it’s also less absorbent and softer than its non-French cousin. That’s why Terry Cloth is more commonly found in towels.

Maintaining French Terry Fabric

The TL;DR of this is that you can throw your French Terry stuff in the wash, but we have some helpful tips for you.

Is French Terry Fabric Easy to Clean?

French Terry fabric is extremely easy to clean. All it takes is a wash in cold water, and letting it air-dry, or tossing it in the dryer on a low-heat setting to prolong the lifespan. Under no circumstance should you need to dry-clean it. But if you’re feeling really fancy, hey why not.

Does French Terry Fabric Wrinkle?

Our French Terry doesn’t really wrinkle. Unless, you know, you leave it in a ball on the floor in the closet. No fabric could handle such a fate.
